Bwindi is a hidden gem that is a safe haven to several primates, fauna and flora species making it one of the richest ecosystems in Africa, primates are particularly abundant namely mountain gorillas, L’Hoes’t monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, baboons, potto, Demidoff’s galago, needle- clawed galago red- tailed monkeys, chimpanzees to mention but a few.
Additionally, this park is home to more than fourteen species of snakes nine of them are endemic to the park namely. puff Adder, black mamba, rock python, African tree cobra, Gunther’s green tree snake, great lakes Bush viper and many more
There are also almost twenty-seven species of frogs and toads, chameleons, lizards, skins and geckos. you ae bound to notice the incredible variety of butterflies in the park more than 202 species have been identified so for.
Elephants are found at this destination although few in numbers they are often in the south -east of the park around the bamboo zone and the Mubwindi Swamp. The other mammals present include bushpigs, giant forest hogs, black fronted duikers, clawless, otter golden cats’ side stripped jackal civet, genet with many bats and rodents.
Just like Mgahinga Park much of the vegetation at Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is typical tropical rain forest with a very dense thick undergrowth hence the name “impenetrable” the park also has an extensive stand of bamboo that covers almost six square kilometers a rare and beautiful habitat for birds and primates found nowhere in the park.
In addition, there are more than 200 species of trees in Bwindi ten of which occur no where in Uganda and sixteen of which show a very limited distribution else where in the pearl of Africa.
Many bird species call this forest their home hence an ideal spot for bird watching activity the commonly seen birds include Frazer’s eagle brown -necked parrot, African green broadbill, sunbirds, blue turaco, white tailed blue catcher olive back, grey parrot, fly catcher grey capped warbler, black bee eater, dusky long- tailed cuckoo, blue throated roller, blue headed sun bird white winged tern malachite, pied kingfisher, African fish eagle, papyrus gonolek papyrus canary and many more.
